Mos Def Pulls a Puff Daddy and Changes Name
After more than 16 years of producing and recording music under the moniker Mos Def, rapper Dante Smith is preparing to retire his artistry name in favor of a newer model.
Smith will officially discontinue the use of the name Mos Def by the end of 2011, in favor of his new name “Yasiin.” The Arab name translates to “rich” in English.
This Puff Daddy-esque move comes at arguably the height of a career that has spanned music and film, with his last record, The Ecstatic, released in 2009 to positive reviews.
It’s not the first major career move for Smith in the last year. The rapper signed to Kanye West’s label GOOD Music in September 2010, with no word yet on his label debut release.
But hey, what’s in a name change anyways.
Puff Diddy or whatever turned out fine.
