Baskettcase: Famous Music Feuds

September 21, 2011

Dave Mustaine and James Hetfield in happier times, pre-feud, pre-Kirk Hammett. Truly metal.

A column by Jeremy Baskett

Unless you weren’t alive this weekend, I’m sure you all heard/saw the Mayweather 1-2 knockout punch versus his overly apologetic opponent, Victor Ortiz. Classic. This, however, was not the only fight in Vegas this weekend.

Mediocre R&B singer and sex-video starmaker Ray J reportedly punched rapper Fabolous in the face right before the rapper’s performance at the Palms Hotel. The fight stemmed from various Twitter postings, making jokes about Ray J performing “One Wish” on the piano for Floyd Mayweather. You can hear the musician’s take on the situation on his interview on Power 105.1’s the Breakfast Club.

This fresh beef leads to this week’s column, which of course is my take on my most cherished of beefs in the music world of past.

3. Metallica Vs. Megadeth

Former Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica in 1983 for alleged drug and alcohol abuse. Mustaine would go on to form metal heavyweight Megadeth, but the feud would live on until 2001 when Lars Ulrich and Mustaine met with a therapist to ‘settle the matter.’ Mustaine admitted that he was hurt that Ulrich and the rest of Metallica gave up on him, rather than putting him in rehab and making him “second best” to replaced guitarist Kirk Hammett, who Mustaine blasted for stealing his solos note for note. Harsh…

2. Moby Vs. Eminem

If any of you can remember the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, you may remember this one. Eminem had just won the VMA for the Best Male Video, and during his acceptance speech, he spotted Moby in the crowd booing him. The rapper then stated a threat to Moby mid-acceptance speech saying, “…That little Moby girl threw me out of my zone for a minute…Keep booing little girl. I will hit a man with glasses”. Eminem went further by making fun of and dressing up like Moby in his next video, “Without Me”. When asked what Moby thought of the ordeal, he released this quote:

“He shoots me on stage, he dresses up like me in the video, talks about having sex with me in his song. I’ve figured it out. He has a crush on me. And at some point he found out that I was straight and he’s so upset and hurt, the fact that he has this unrequited crush on me, that’s why he’s so upset. I’m just waiting for Eminem to come out of the closet.”

Score: 1 Moby. 0 Eminem.

1. Dr. Dre Vs. Eazy-E

By far my all time favorite feud between artists is Dr. Dre and Eazy-E. Both being founding members of the hip hop collective NWA, Dre decided that he was not living up to his potential and decided to leave the group to sign with Deathrow Records as a solo act. Eazy-E being the investor to make NWA happen wasn’t too pleased with this, and that’s when it all began. Eazy-E made several diss-songs slamming Dre to the ground. Eazy-E was eventually diagnosed with AIDS that lead to his death. Dr. Dre went to the hospital to clear up the beef, but Eazy was unconscious and soon after passed away. Dre makes amends in his song “Whats the Difference” on his album, Chronic 2001.

You can see Eazy-E’s slam-video towards Dre below.
