Another Brick in the Wall: The Floyd Journey Continues

September 27, 2011

A Column by Kelson Ayers

Pink Floyd's legacy is driving strongly into the 21st century, brough to you by listeners like you.

Let me start off by saying, I am a Pink Floyd fan, the people who know me can tell you right off the bat that it is close to an obsession. Hell even I know I am obsessed. I am a fan that believes that when it comes down to passion, talent and an overall sound, there has never been a band to measure up to the standards that these fine gentleman set for themselves since their formation back in 1965. They are one of the few bands, that became bigger then the game.

Its been quite a while since 1965, so I guess you would ask why would I be writing about a bunch of old guys who probably cant even pick up a guitar anymore. Well as a matter of fact, the remaining members of Pink Floyd are planning on a re-release of their best works, starting this month. “The Best of Pink Floyd: A Foot in the Door” will be the first, emerging November 8th. The vinyl editions of “Wish You Were Here,” The Wall” and Dark Side of the Moon will follow shortly. Many would ask why release these albums again, seeing as they all have been remastered more then on one occasion.

The answer is quite simple. To remember.

The sounds of Pink Floyd will never be copied again, so therefore it is up to the truest fans from here on out. Trust me when I say there are many to continue the wide spread influence of their music. If you think about it, you would have to go a very long distance to find someone who has not at least heard of Pink Floyd. Most of the people I know have a favorite Floyd song. My personal favorite is “Time.” It resonates to this day, just as strongly as it did back in the 60s and 70s. Generations, connected through great music. The simple joys that music brings to your life. Isn’t that what its all about anyway?

So as you are cruising along that dark highway, headed on the subway on a long ride home or even at your home lighting up that last joint, for the night, put on your favorite Floyd album and travel to a world that is beyond ours.

If you don’t have that album, let this generation’s superstars take you there. This week, late night host Jimmy Fallon will be hosting a Floyd week to honor there music, and new release. All week September 26-30th, you can hear these classics performed by some of music’s best. Including a special performance by front man Roger Waters and the Foo Fighters as they perform “Inside the Flesh ” from The Wall . Others include ” The Shins” and Pearl Jam to finish the week.

I guess you could say that this marks another brick in the wall for their lifetime achievement in music. Well folks that’s all for this week and remember to keep rocking.
