The Growlers @ Mercury Lounge: Live Review

May 13, 2011

Nielsen and company attracted a packed house at the Mercury Lounge in New York City's lower east side on Tuesday, May 10th.

California’s own, The Growlers, made an appearance in the Lower East Side at the Mercury Lounge Tuesday night in front of a packed house. The band has recently been touring in support of The Entrance Band, however Tuesday was their night, as they played a near perfect set for the first New York headlining show. The band a plethora of fan favorites from their latest album Hot Tropics including the songs, ‘The Graveyards Full’ and ‘Badlands’ as well as ‘Someone Somthing Jr.’ from their Are You In Or Are You Out album.

Lead singer Brooks Neilsen was tempted multiple times throughout the show by a very enthusiastic female fan, whose surprising rush onstage preceded giving Brooks sluttly pelvic thrusts towards his groin and a very blatant croch grab. Though annoying at first glace, Brooks transformed her into a hilarious part of the show that only enhanced, never humiliating. (You be the judge.) An impeccable show was only altered by Brooks’ voice sounding a little over worked and scratchy, but hey, it only enhanced the growl of the Growlers.
